I'm scared. I might just change into an animal and hide behind this tree.
Max was enslaved when he was just five. He thinks his parents were killed but he can’t be sure. He remembers being dragged away as his mother cried and that’s the last he saw of either of them. Amazingly, he survived for years in the Drow mines, beaten most days and never fed as much as he would like, or even need. He learned that the Drow enjoyed when their slaves acted in fear, and because he was just a scared young boy, this helped him to survive. As he grew older a kindly Dwarven druid called Dondal Silverhammer started to look after him and teach him ways to find food in the mines that nobody else could. Slowly he learned the spells of the caverns that Dondal taught him. Dondal also taught him that he should never abandon his friends and he holds this to heart even though he is always afraid, whilst all of his friends stay he will never abandon them. One day Dondal whispered to him “today is the day we escape.” He couldn’t believe it. He was almost paralysed with fear and excitement at the same time. The escape went well for a while, until at the last guard post they were spotted. They ran and almost made it to the rocks when Dondal was felled by an arrow in the leg. Max didn’t know what to do. He was scared but prepared himself to rush forward and heal Dondal, after all he was the only father he could truly remember. “Run!” shouted Dondal. “You will never make it.” Unsure what to do, Max hesitated. He still blames himself for that hesitation as it may have been the fraction of a second it would have taken to save Dondal’s life. A Drow arrow hit Dondal in the throat and his eyes went milky white instantly. Tears of sadness burning in his eyes, he turned and ran. He never looked back, even though he now wishes he had seen Dondal one last time.
